Because it suppresses the immune system, it leaves patients more susceptible to infections. But sometimes Prednisone is essential, I had to take a weeks worth after a bout with pneumonia. With quadriplegia and more severe cases of COPD a tracheotomy is needed. I have had two in my lifetime but was able to wean off dependent airflow and did not need an open airway to have mucus suctioned out of my lungs. The tracheotomy consists of making an incision on the anterior aspect of the neck and opening a direct airway through an incision in the trachea. The resulting stoma can serve independently as an airway or as a site for a tracheostomy tube to be inserted; this tube allows a person to breathe without the use of his or her nose or mouth.
